Decking

Installing a timber decking extension on your house can increase the value of your property, increase the amount of space you have for relaxing and entertaining, and generally add to you and your family’s quality of life. Folding doors that open on to the deck allow you to extend your internal living area providing indoor outdoor flow to your home, great for entertaining guests with those summer barbeques.

A successful hardwood deck merges with the architecture and depends on selecting the right timber to blend with your existing home. Timber Decks are ideal for sloping or uneven ground allowing you to increase your usable living space, and they provide a cheaper and better looking solution than concrete or brick. If you are looking for a more economical alternative then consider using treated pine decking. With the correct fasteners and regular maintenance it will give you a quality deck for many years. If you are looking for less maintenance then perhaps a deck built with Modwood decking may be the best solution for you. Modwood decking is a composite product that is Australian owned and made, making it the best choice in the composite decking range.

It is possible to even include a spa if the structure is reinforced to support the weight of the water. Large trees can provide shade and a natural feel, but if they are to be when incorporated into the design you must ensure they have plenty of room to grow. The best position for a timber deck depends on your needs it may be to maximise shade in summer and the sunlight in winter, or to provide extra living space year round to different parts of your home.

Our free deck design service at Gooding Timber and Hardware can allow you to plan your deck design to suit your needs and budget.

Flooring

Your choice of flooring has a significant impact on the design, look and potential use of the area you are building. Just like choosing a house paint opens up so many colour options that can determine mood, functionality, look and feel of a room or building. For example some timber floors brighten a space, while others can make a room seem cosier. Rob and Brian at Gooding Timber and Hardware can give you the right flooring advice.

Certain timber grains integrate well with contemporary designs and others provide more of a classic look.

A hardwood floor can provide the aesthetic or functional end product you want with your building or renovation.

There are many benefits of solid timber hardwood for example:

  • They have a timeless quality that outlasts passing shifts of fashion to ensure your property doesn’t become out dated.
  • Hardwood timber floors are extremely durable.
  • If after many years your floor begins to show signs of wear, a simple re-sand and re-coat can bring your hardwood floor or stairs back to pristine condition.

Different timbers are suited to different purposes, for example internal flooring, outdoor stairs, decking, or structural support. Due to the wide variation in timber qualities specialist knowledge is crucial when selecting certain timber species for certain jobs.

Hardwood timber floors vary greatly in colour, density and grain, so we are here at Gooding Timber and Hardware to help you make an informed decision about your choice of timber.

With our many years of experience we can assist our clients with timber selection for their job, we check availability and we can assist with design and specifications. This ensures that ordering your timber is simple and convenient.

Building Tips

  • Plan in Advance

Any renovation big or small needs planning in advance including a renovation budget. A budget is an essential tool that will give you a clear idea of what you can afford to spend on your building project or home improvement. Keep costs under control by keeping things simple. Choosing standard

  • One job at a time

Break down big jobs into small jobs, your renovation doesn’t have to be completed in one go. If your overall project seems overwhelming either for your lifestyle or your budget just take things one job at a time.

  • Tracking down a Tradie

It pays to plan carefully for the availability of skilled tradespeople. Many parts of the building industry virtually shut down in January for example, so you could find it hard to track down a tradie.

  • Major renovations take time

There are some TV programs that make replacing a kitchen or adding an extra bedroom look quick and easy, but don’t fall for that big jobs and major renovations take time and money.

  • Building inspection

Arrange a building inspection before you start renovating, a professional building inspection will confirm if your home is structurally sound and able to support your planned improvements, particularly if your project involves adding a second storey.

  • Labour costs

Labour costs are likely to eat up a solid chunk of your renovation budget – usually around 30% of the total expense so shop around for quotes.

“Hey boys …. I’ve got a couple of jobs in Gympie and Craigburn. “Can you deliver my timber?” That’s the problem I threw at the Gooding Timber yard and sure enough, they came through with flying colours. It’s pretty hard to get that type of service anywhere, especially when the timber yard is on the Gold Coast and I want my materials up country. They don’t mind a challenge … It’s easy to see why I’ve dealt with them since 1992 for all my timber supplies, AND … there’s no way I’d go anywhere else. Thanks again Goodings, Rob Heather
