Timber and Ply

Timber

Australians regard forest products like timber, furniture, wood panels, etc. as a part of their everyday lives, and most of us love the bush. That is why the renewable forest industries as a group make up one of Australia’s largest resource industries. Management plans are prepared by foresters to ensure that harvesting is well managed and that other forest values are protected. The forest is permanently conserved by a sustainable harvesting and regeneration programme.

Gooding Timber and Hardware supports sustainable timber production, where the forests are managed by qualified foresters that adopt the principles of sustainable yield to produce a renewable resource while catering for a range of forest values.

There are a variety of products to choose from these days when building a new structure but timber is still a firm favourite. The environmental benefits of timber outweigh other products by far. Wood is the only truly renewable and sustainable building material. Timber is the most energy efficient building material because wood is made from solar energy and that’s all that’s required to produce a natural and renewable product.

A timber framed house actually stores about 3.1 tons of carbon. However the alternative building products such as concrete, steel, and plastic require a lot more energy and use of fossil fuels to produce.

Plywood

We source a wide range of plywood and timber types at Gooding Timber and Hardware from various suppliers, including environmentally friendly plywood manufactured from Pinus radiata, using veneers bonded with products of a quality and grade that complies with the joint Australian/New Zealand Standard AS/NZS 2269. 0:2008 and PAA JAS/ANZ accreditation.

We can source and supply plywood suitable for general structural building and construction uses. It can be detailed to meet the requirements of the Building Code of Australia in relation to structure, durability, fire, moisture and energy efficiency. A wide range of sheet sizes and thickness provide optimal design flexibility.

Plywood flooring is available as a strong, durable pre-sanded panel available in a range of thicknesses suitable for use in structural and non-structural flooring.

Plywood has features such as:

  • Superior strength – higher stiffness so can be designed to meet high industrial loads
  • Will withstand rain and exposure during construction
  • Can be H3 treated for external or wet area uses
  • Some types will withstand under floor heating systems

Building Tips

  • Plan in Advance

Any renovation big or small needs planning in advance including a renovation budget. A budget is an essential tool that will give you a clear idea of what you can afford to spend on your building project or home improvement. Keep costs under control by keeping things simple. Choosing standard

  • One job at a time

Break down big jobs into small jobs, your renovation doesn’t have to be completed in one go. If your overall project seems overwhelming either for your lifestyle or your budget just take things one job at a time.

  • Tracking down a Tradie

It pays to plan carefully for the availability of skilled tradespeople. Many parts of the building industry virtually shut down in January for example, so you could find it hard to track down a tradie.

  • Major renovations take time

There are some TV programs that make replacing a kitchen or adding an extra bedroom look quick and easy, but don’t fall for that big jobs and major renovations take time and money.

  • Building inspection

Arrange a building inspection before you start renovating, a professional building inspection will confirm if your home is structurally sound and able to support your planned improvements, particularly if your project involves adding a second storey.

  • Labour costs

Labour costs are likely to eat up a solid chunk of your renovation budget – usually around 30% of the total expense so shop around for quotes.

“Hey boys …. I’ve got a couple of jobs in Gympie and Craigburn. “Can you deliver my timber?” That’s the problem I threw at the Gooding Timber yard and sure enough, they came through with flying colours. It’s pretty hard to get that type of service anywhere, especially when the timber yard is on the Gold Coast and I want my materials up country. They don’t mind a challenge … It’s easy to see why I’ve dealt with them since 1992 for all my timber supplies, AND … there’s no way I’d go anywhere else. Thanks again Goodings, Rob Heather
